RDP houses are government-subsidized homes for low-income South African citizens,, not for sale or rent by beneficiaries. They are intended for personal residence, and renting them out is illegal, risking repossession. Selling is only allowed after 8 years of ownership, through a formal legal process involving the Department of Human Settlements.

The Department of Human Settlement in Western Cape Province & The City of Cape Town is looking for citizens who applied for RDP houses from 1999-2020 to check if their application on the housing subsidy has approved so that they can come to collect their approval letters, keys and Certificates of their RDP houses. Having a basic housing (RDP house) is a fundamental right of each person irrespective of race, gender and social status.
It is the city's responsibility to provide and allocate Government subsidies housing, otherwise known as RDP houses. To date, over 60 000 housing units have been delivered.

Beneficiaries often express joy at finally having their own place,, which eliminates the need to pay rent.

Some residents report finally receiving approval after waiting for many years, with some cases dating back to applications made in the early 2000s.

Some applicants have found that their names are listed as beneficiaries, but the houses were allocated to other people without their knowledge.
